Over the past year, Medly has seen a 700% increase in the number of prescriptions filled with our pharmacy services. To better accommodate this growing customer base and to meet the needs of current and future patients, we have expanded our retail pharmacy location and fulfillment center in Baltimore anchoring our new base in Maryland’s biggest city.
At the end of April, we announced the location of our new headquarters at 300 St. Paul Street, in the heart of Downtown Baltimore. The new pharmacy location will allow us to serve 30x more patients and provide free same-day prescription delivery to all of Baltimore and its suburbs within a 50-mile radius of the new location.
The highly trained and knowledgeable staff at Medly Baltimore is an essential element of our elevated standard of pharmacy care. Archana Zala, the Supervising Pharmacist at Medly in Baltimore, is one such staff member.
Archana Zala received her Bachelor of Pharmacy from RGUHS University in Bangalore, India. After working as a hospital pharmacist, she earned B. Pharm Hons. from Nirma University in Gujarat, India. Zala is a Registered Pharmacist with Maryland Board of Pharmacy, and has an extensive understanding of specialty pharmacy, long-term care, ambulatory care, and community pharmacy settings. She possesses exceptional communication, customer service, & clinical services skills.
Zala chose to become a pharmacist because it was an opportunity to combine her love and passion with medicine with her desire to make an impact in patient care. “Seeing patients become healthier and happier drives my passion,” Zala says. This is also why she chose to pursue Specialty Pharmacy in particular.
“Specialty Pharmacy allows for more longitudinal patient care, oftentimes in an interprofessional setting. It is truly unique since you have the opportunity to interact with both other health care providers and patients equally and work as a team to provide the highest quality of care for a patient.”
In addition to filling prescriptions, Zala works with patients to administer vaccines, provide medication therapy management, OTC medication counseling, assist with smoking cessation, and helps monitor chronic disease. “Pharmacists,” says Zala, “also check for allergies, drug interactions & medication dosing and provide clinical recommendations to physicians when appropriate. We also help save money by providing cost-savings rebate information and also recommend low cost alternatives.”
Zala moved to Maryland in 2012 for an internship, during which she received a number of job and business opportunities that convinced her to settle in the city.
In Baltimore, Zala says, “Pharmacists are consistently ranked as trusted professionals and there is a need for pharmacists in a wide variety of work settings like hospitals, retail, specialty, long-term care, managed care, pharmaceuticals, and government agencies like NIH & FDA. Pharmacists play key leadership roles in all aspects of the healthcare system.”
Zala enjoys working at Medly because the company values align with her own. “Medly’s core values of innovation, mission, and vision are reflected in my own professional and personal values,” Zala says. “I consider myself an innovator and it makes me proud to be part of an organization that’s leading the future of the industry with a patient centric mindset.” She also appreciates the commonality between the goals of the company and her own. “There's nothing I love more than when I am working with others towards a common goal, and that's what excites me about working here.”
“Everyday at Medly there are many inspiring moments that fill my heart with joy and happiness that I am part of an organization that is dedicated to serving patients and all of their prescriptions needs,” Zala says.
Recently, Zala encountered a patient who was close to losing their eyesight and called the pharmacy to inquire about their prescription eye drops. “The patient was quoted $2,000, Zala says, “because the drops were not covered through their insurance.” To cover the cost of their medication, the patient was planning on taking a loan out from their relatives. But with Medly’s help, “the patient was able to get a 90 day supply of their medication with no copay.” When the medication was delivered to them that same day, says Zala, “the patient was in tears.”
When not serving the patients and community at Medly, Zala can be found engaging with the greater Baltimore community in a number of ways. “I’m very passionate about dance – as a spectator, participant, and dance studio owner,” Zala says. “Our group performs and competes nationwide. We meet up and practice at the studio after work.”
She also spends a lot of time after work on her dance studio’s business development, promotion, and content creation. While dancing is her first passion, Zala also enjoys a wide variety of activities like traveling, yoga, meditation, volunteering, reading self-development books, participating in multiple self-development workshops, and weekly mastermind calls with her life coaches.
