Medly Doctor Spotlight: Dr. Agosto

Medly

At Medly Pharmacy, our job is to make the prescription process painless, for both providers and patients. And the physicians we work with, of course, are an essential part of that process. To highlight various practices and practitioners who’ve partnered with us, we’re bringing you an ongoing series of interviews with some of those providers themselves. For our first installment, we’re introducing you to Dr. Agosto, a physician specializing in Rheumatology.

Medly:

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into your specialty?

Dr. Agosto:

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Now I'm in New York, I have been for 20 something years. When I was in medical school, I thought I wanted to do infectious diseases. But then I did rheumatology as a resident, because it was pretty challenging and fascinating to me. I worked for three years as a general medicine doctor, and that really made me think, "I want to be a rheumatologist." I love it. I've only done rheumatology. I never did medicine. I don't do medicine at all. Everybody that I see is a strictly rheumatology case.

Medly:

What are go-to therapies you find effective?

Dr. Agosto:

I love Humira because it is taken once a week, and doesn't have the preservative issue that makes it really, really burning. I used to love Enbrel. It was the first kid on the block. Everybody has responded, which nobody anticipated. If they run out of medicine, they will have to put the patient on a waiting list. But I absolutely love the Cosentyx, which is, I believe an IL 17. And I love the IVs. I love the ones that you can just put in once every six weeks or every eight weeks.

Medly:

How did COVID-19 affect the way you practice? Did you change anything in the office and how do you think it'll affect you long term?

Dr. Agosto:

People are not coming in like they're supposed to without having to worry. I have patients on medications that make them susceptible to things, and a virus that is so very aggressive is really in the back of my mind. I have had to change the way I practice. I have to do what everybody's doing as far as the masks and the alcohol and the temperature. All that is time-consuming. I cannot have my usual waiting room full of people.

Medly:

Are you doing any telehealth counseling?

Dr. Agosto:

I was doing telemedicine, telephone or tele visit or media calls. It was challenging. I do it because it's better than nothing, but I prefer to see them. But, if they don't want to come out, I have to adjust.

Medly:

When you're not practicing, what do you enjoy doing?

Dr. Agosto:

Traveling in the car with my kids and my husband. And we'll go explore new places. We go camping. We like to go to little shops and find out what we like, what we don't like.

Medly:

If you could go back to yourself as a student, what would you recommend?

Dr. Agosto:

Enjoy your life!

Medly:

Any other words of wisdom regarding rheumatology?

Dr. Agosto:

Be sure that whatever specialty you get is what you really truly like. Don't think too much about the economics, because things go up and down. If you choose something where you cannot have the kind of life that you want, you're going to be just miserable. You know, when I was a student, everybody was doing family medicine and nobody was doing specialty. And I said, "Well, I'm going to do a specialty." So just try it. Enjoy it and do it and have fun.
