When it comes to skin care, enthusiasts go back and forth on which and how many products you need to promote clear, beautiful skin.

Skinimalism, or minimalistic skin care, has grown in popularity in recent months. The idea behind skinimalism is to cut down on heavy, harsh products and allow your naturally beautiful complexion to do the work for you.

We’ve been loving the recent shift from product-heavy skin care, to simple routines that prioritize the skin’s natural balance. Now, we’re breaking down how a minimalistic, tailored skin care regimen may be your key to glowing, happy skin.

Here are some things to think about as you work toward that natural glow.

Less is More

Try narrowing down your routine to fewer, more focused skin care solutions. You’ll not only be spending less, but you’ll reduce waste that comes from the production and packaging of these products as well. Plus, using too many products can make it more difficult to identify which products create what results.

Looking for a baseline of can’t miss steps for your routine? We recommend including the following:

1. Cleanser A facial cleanser is a skincare product used to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt, and other types of pollutants from the skin, helping to keep pores clear and prevent skin conditions such as acne.

2. Moisturizer Throughout the day, water evaporates from the surface layers of our skin. There are compounds (like our natural lipids) which help lock moisture in. These are moisturizers. If your skin is dry or flaky, you need a moisturizer to help retain water.

3. Sunscreen Sunscreen is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from the sun. Applying sunscreen is important due to the risk of sun damage and skin cancer. Exposure to the sun causes most of the blemishes we seek to avoid, and can lead to much more serious consequences, including skin cancer. Try choosing a sunscreen with soothing aloe and vitamin E to help to reduce signs of sun-induced irritation.

Go natural

Natural ingredients, like aloe vera, green tea or rosehip, are trusted by many to promote a hydrated and smooth finish. Try a natural skin or makeup product so that you can track what’s going on your skin.

While we think it’s beneficial to explore natural, skin-loving ingredients, funny-sounding names aren’t always a bad thing; find a balance between the two that works best for you.

Stay focused

Once you have the basics down, focus on supplementing with products that meet your specific needs like a tailored serum or mask.

If you’re looking for a good place to start, try identifying your skin type and picking products that target common skin situations for that type. You should always consider how product additions may interact with one another, and the effects these interactions may have on your complexion. Opt for products that fit your skin care needs, rather than the hottest new trend on the market. Once you find what works for you, you’ll get that glow in no time!
