RX Deepdive: Tymlos

Of the estimated 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, about eight million, or 80%, are women. Additionally, approximately one in two women over the age of 50 will break a bone because of this condition. There are multiple reasons why being female puts you at risk of developing osteoporosis and broken bones.

For one, women tend to have smaller, thinner bones than men. Secondly, estrogen is a hormone that protects bones, and its presence within the body decreases sharply when women reach menopause. While people used to think that osteoporosis was an inevitable part of aging, today we know a lot more about how to prevent, detect, and treat this disease.

What is Tymlos?

Tymlos is a medication used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis and is proven to reduce fracture risk. Tymlos is a daily injection you can give yourself at home. Each Tymlos pen contains 30 days of medication and the pen needle is small, about 5 to 8mm, about the size of an eyelash.

How does Tymlos work?

Unlike many osteoporosis treatments that are antiresorptives that slow down bone loss, Tymlos is an anabolic medication which is designed to help boost the natural process that builds new bone. Throughout our lives, our bones go through a remodeling process in which old bone is broken down and new, healthy bone is formed. For women who have undergone menopause, declining estrogen levels can cause women to lose bone faster than the body can rebuild new bone.

How Tymlos Works

Tymlos, as an anabolic medication, helps boost the body’s natural bone-building process by activating cells called osteoblasts. These cells normally form new, healthy bone through the remodeling process. With the help of anabolic medications, these cells work harder to replace the bone you’ve lost to osteoporosis. They may even help reduce your risk of future fractures.

How effective is Tymlos?

A clinical study looked at how effective Tymlos was at treating osteoporosis and reducing the risk of fracture in over 1600 postmenopausal women worldwide over the course of eighteen months. Women taking Tymlos were compared with women taking a placebo (an injection that did not have any medicine).

The trial showed that after 18 months, women taking Tymlos had an 86% lower risk of having a spinal fracture as well as a lower risk of having fracture than those on placebo. Your doctor might describe these spinal fractures as “compression fractures,” as they are the types of fractures that can cause women with postmenopausal osteoporosis to hunch.

Also after 18 months, women taking Tymlos had a 43% lower risk of non-spinal fractures when compared with placebo. Lastly, women taking Tymlos had significant increases in bone mineral density (BMD) in the spine and hip compared with women taking placebo.
